The Biotehcnical Faculty

The Biotechnical Faculty (BTF) Podgorica is a member of the University of Montenegro, with longest research tradition in the country (since 1937.). Mission of the BTF is to be backbone of the institutional support to the agricultural sector by performing three types of activities:

  • Research
  • High education
  • Services

Research component of the BTF is the oldest one, not only in the Faculty but in the whole Montenegrin science society. BTF is broader recognized by its research and results achieved so far. BTF activities are carried out through the organization of fundamental, applied and developmental research in many field of agriculture.


High education is the newest component of the BTF activities, third generation of the students enrolled in September 2007. High education is performed in accordance to Bologna declaration, organized in two divisions: Plant production and Livestock production.

BTF provides two main type of services to the farming sector:

  • Extension services - two so called ''sister'' services: Livestock Selection Service and Plant Production Extension Service have regional offices through the whole country;
  • Laboratory's services play very important part of the BTF activities. There are several interlinked laboratories functioning in the BTF: Plant protection lab; Milk lab; Lab for agro chemistry and soil sciences; Wine (Oenology) lab; Pomology labs; Seed and seedlings lab; Feeds control lab in establishing. In implementation of the EU standards, role of these labs is more and more important.

In terms of staff, BTF engages 170 employees in total, 32 employees are researchers with PhD and 12 with Master degree. In addition to the respectful human and technical capacities, it should be stressed that BTF, as the only research entity in this field, is the main partner of the Ministry of agriculture in performing official tasks related to the food and feed quality control and safety, as well as in defining and implementing agricultural policy, sector analyses, drafting of legal documents etc.

During 71 years of existence, BTF has been sharing position and destiny of the agriculture and science in Montenegrin society. However, BTF has succeeded to keep continuity in research, achieving many results directly applicable in plant and animal production, as well as the international cooperation with similar institutions from many countries.
